The school year is upon us

The 2014-15 school year launches at OC tomorrow (18th) for faculty and staff (and incoming freshmen, who will participate in "Earn Your Wings" orientation) and next Monday (25th) for all students. Yesterday Celeste and I went to campus to help freshmen move into their dorms. There are close to 600 entering OC as freshmen this year.
Tomorrow I will address these frosh with a presentation entitled "Learning at the Next Level" as part of their "academic welcome." Basically, I define "learning," give them a model for learning at the university level, and then some examples of the model at work in different pedagogical modalities (e.g., lecture, reading textbooks & journal articles, etc.). Should be good.
I'll also address the faculty this week as part of a syllabus workshop (how to write objectives/learning outcomes) as well as provide some training on using our learning management system. Then, later in the week the deans' council (of which I am a member) will go to Dry Gulch to join a camp with the incoming freshmen.
The *real* fun, however, begins on the 25th. This term I will teach Elementary Greek I (25 students so far), two independent studies in Intermediate Greek, and Introduction to Linguistics this last one is for the Language and Literature department). I'm pretty excited to get started, even though my syllabi are not completely ready. I should have everything ready and online by Thursday. :)
